Maquia belongs to a special race called the Ivorfs who can live for hundreds of years. However, Maquia has always felt lonely despite being surrounded by her people, having been an orphan since she was young. She daydreams about the outside world, but dares not leave her home due to the warnings of the clan leader. One day, the kingdom of Mizzarte invades her homeland. They already have the remaining giant dragons, the Renato, under their control, and now their king wants to add immortality to his bloodline. They destroy the Ivorf homeland and kill most of its inhabitants. Maquia is caught in the middle of the attack, and is carried away by a Renato. She soon dies, and is left abandoned in the forest, now truly alone except for the cries of a single infant in the distance. Maquia finds the baby in a ruined village and decides to raise him as her own, naming him Ariel. Although she knows nothing about the human world, she also knows nothing about the human world, and how to raise a child who ages much faster than her.
